Ray Chen will play a Violin Recital in Cerritos on Wed. Sept. 14th at 7:30 at the Center for Performing Arts. He will play music from his first CD:

TARTINI (arr. Kreisler)- Sonata in g minor from Devil’s Trill
FRANCK- Sonata in A Major
BACH- Chaconne from Partita in d minor
WIENIAWSKI- Legende, Op. 17
WIENIAWSKI- Variations on the Original Theme, Op. 15

This is an extraordinary young violinist of Taiwanese decent, who began as a Suzuki student in Australia. I had the pleasure of hearing him play a flawless and engaging Recital in San Diego earlier this year.

Ray was accepted to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music at age 15. He went on to compete at several international competitions and has made an international name for himself as winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition and the Yehudi Menuhin Competition.

“Ray Chen can do pretty much anything he wants on the violin,” hails the Washington Post. I would encourage my students go see him while you can still get your hands on a ticket. It will be something to remember.

TEC student, Scottish Fiddler and Eagle Scout plays for Irvine City Council

Christian, our resident Eagle Scout and Scottish Fiddler recently played the National Anthem for the Irvine City Council Meeting, July 12th. Mayor Kang recalled the young TEC student who showed up for the Irvine Day in the Park with the Talent Education Center: Suzuki Violin students in his cowboy hat and duds several years ago when Christian was much shorter. The mayor is always pleased to add one more community service pin to an Eagle Scout sash with merit bages on both sides of his uniform.

From the age of 6, Christian has been a student at TEC with Ms. Cynthia. Our Scottish fiddler chose the music that he performed which included “The Star Spangled Banner” and Butterfly, a Scottish Fiddle Tune. He has so many favorite fiddle tunes that it was not easy to choose just one for such a short presentation. He helped to start the meeting with his own interpretation of the National Anthem played with out an accompaniment.

I would like to thank Mayor Kang and the City Council for inviting students like Christian to perform on their agendas. It is always a wonderful experience for our young people.

Earlier this year Ms. Cynthia was doing research on line to find out if there were any new ways to fund violins for violin programs. She came across a website that featured information for violin students and violin programs in chalenging new places around the world. After searching the Violin Resources on the site for any new ideas about funding violins, Ms. Cynthia contacted the editor and asked where other programs where getting violins for their youngest students.

When Sarah Koh realized that we had an unusual program which made the effort to start children from a young age she offered to do an interview about SASS on her site. Sarah asked us lots of great questions to help describe the challenges we are faced with. I want to thank her for recognizing our unique problems as a string program which attempts to start children at the preschool level.

Check out this String tro with your children. Curtis Conservatory graduates who play many Styles of American music at another level. If you don’t like the blue grass you will love the Hungarian Gypsy music at the end. One of the violinist is Nick Kendall who grew up Suzuki with his grandfather, John kendall the father of the American Suzuki movement.

Best of all they are coming to play with the Pacific Symphony in August. Let me know if you are interested. I’m going to try to get group rates for the lawn at the top.

Suzuki Violin was a hit at Irvine Global Village Festival

Thank you to everyone that helped out with the Irvine Global Village Festival Booth and Performance. We had the best shade on the right side of the stage this year. Every time we had a Twinkler come out and play at the booth during the day we had an appreciative audience full of preschoolers in front of us soaking up the music and the shade. It was a fun place to practice.

Ms. Cynthia had plenty of cold water on hand under the table for performers. We also found a fun way to do the Up like a rocket game with straws so the audience could participate. I couldn’t keep up with the demand for gumi life savers on a straw. (They also blow over real easy in the breeze) We should definitely get some Suzuki kids fiddling for next year. TEC Suzuki Students will play in Irvine Global Village Festival in OCT:

TEC Suzuki students have been invited to play in the Irvine Global Village Festival at the Cultural Pavilion on Sat. OCT 3rd at 4:00pm.

Festival is held at Bill Barber Park on that Saturday from 10am - 6pm TEC will also have a booth in the Kids Village.

Irvine City Council Meeting starts with Music by Suzuki Violin Children from TEC and SASS:

Suzuki violin Children from both TEC and SASS/OCCTAC played for Mayor Kang and the City Council on Tuesday at 5pm.

I don’t remember the piano accompaniment ever being that loud. We couldn’t hear it the first time we started playing. I’m glad we restarted. It was a good thing that we played America the Beautiful first. The children did a great job.

Tuesday at 5:00pm nearly 30 violin students from TEC and SASS played for the Irvine City Council Meeting. A video was taken that will appear on the Irvine City website. We also had a picture taken with Mayor Kang.
